Frequently Asked Questions about Voicecom Websites

I already have a website. Can Voicecom host it?

We are happy to move your website to our hosting service, however our development team offers limited website development support to static websites or websites on differing platforms to WordPress CMS. We would therefore recommend migrating your website to WordPress or another suitable CMS if you are considering moving your website to us.

Can I make updates to my website myself?

If you wish to have access to your website to make changes yourself, this is usually taken care of during the website setup phase. Voicecom would have supplied you with login details for your Content Management System (CMS) so that you can log in and make changes whenever you please. If you have lost these login details, please contact us and we can reset them for you.

For older websites that were set up before Voicecom started using CMS, it may be a bit difficult for owners of those websites to make updates.

If you have had prior experience with websites and/or HTML, please contact Voicecom  for a login and a password. You then use these with FTP to connect with your website on the Utopia server.

Applications that support FTP include:
Dreamweaver, CuteFTP, Frontpage and the FTP command line in Windows.

For those clients who are not knowledgeable about the fundamentals of HTML at least and don’t want or have time to learn, the possibility of upgrading your website to a CMS is always there – please check out our Hosted Website Packages or Contact Us to discuss.

Why can’t I format my website content correctly?

The most common cause of bad formatting is when you have copied and pasted your text from Microsoft Office Word, or any other Microsoft Office application. The best way to get around this is to copy the text into a plain text editor, such as Notepad, then copy and paste it back to the website. From there you will be able to edit the formatting.

How do I backup my website?

As the owner of your website, one of the more important things you should do is to regularly perform a backup of the website, especially after major updates.

Voicecom website accounts are backed up by our webhosting team on a weekly basis, for disaster recovery purposes.

It is recommended that the website owner personally oversees a backup of your website. You can perform this yourself using the Backup / Backup Wizard function in your website’s cPanel. You will also want FTP access so that when the wizard saves a zipped file of all your data, you can retrieve it from the server and download it to your local machine for storage.

What is FTP?

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used to transfer files from one host to another host over a TCP based network, such as the Internet.

This is how you can edit a file on your local PC and then using an FTP client, upload it to your website. The client allows you to upload and download files from the directories that are on the server that your website is currently hosted on. FTP is built on a client-server architecture and utilizes separate control and data connections between the client and server. FTP users may authenticate themselves using clear-text sign-in protocol but can connect anonymously if the server is configured to allow it. The first FTP client applications were interactive command-line tools, implementing standard commands and syntax. Graphical user interface clients have since been developed for many of the popular desktop operating systems in use today. We use and recommend Filezilla.

Please note that if you are using a CMS such as WordPress for your website, it is not necessary to worry about FTP unless you have a specific requirement for it.

What is HTML and CSS?

HTML is short for HyperText Markup Language. It is the main markup language used for creating websites and other information that can be displayed in a web browser. It commonly comes in the form of HTML tags enclosed within angle brackets, for example <html>.

CSS is short for Cascading Style Sheets, which is a language used for describing the presentation semantics (look and formatting), including text, colour and layout, of a document.

HTML and CSS are used in conjunction create your website’s look and feel, which is often consistent throughout the entirety of the website. From there, it is ready to fill filled with content.

Generally your web designer is more than capable of making HTML and CSS changes for you. If you are interested in learning HTML and CSS yourself, there are many resources online that can show you the basics and work from there.

What do I do if I can’t see my website?

If you are getting an error message saying “Website not Responding” or “Page cannot be displayed”, click on the Refresh button in your browser to reload your page, or press the “F5” key. If this does not solve your issue, and you can not see any other non-Voicecom website as well, you may have lost your internet connection. This service is provided by your ISP (Internet Service Provider). If your connection does not resume by itself, we suggest you contact your ISP.

If you can see other websites but not your own, please check the web address for any typographical errors (typos). Also try to refresh your browser. If you still can not see your website, please contact us and we will take a look.

If you are seeing a message saying “Bandwidth Exceeded”, you have simply used more bandwidth than your hosting account has been allotted per month. Please contact us to discuss increasing your monthly bandwidth limits.
